I was noodling on what celebrity recipe to feature for Valentine's Day. Here's how my brain works: Valentine's Day equals hearts. Jayne Mansfield had a heart-shaped bathtub (and pool) at her Pink Palace. Quick search yields Jayne's recipe for Meat-Sausage Loaf, and voila!

Recipe from "Cooking As You Like It" by Jane Weeks Martin, 1963. Courtesy of Jenny Hammerton, London, at silverscreensuppers.com.

JAYNE MANSFIELD'S MEAT-SAUSAGE LOAF

2 tablespoons butter

1 cup chopped onions [one medium onion]

1 cup chopped celery [about 4 stalks]

2 pounds / 900g ground beef

1 pound / 450g sausage meat

3 eggs, beaten

1 6-oz can tomato paste [approx 195g]

1 4-oz can chopped mushrooms, drained [approx 115g]

2 teaspoons salt

¼ teaspoon marjoram

¼ teaspoon savory (thyme also works)

3 tablespoons A.1. Sauce [divided use] *

Melt the butter in a skillet [frying pan], sauté the onions and celery 10 minutes. Mix the sautéed vegetables with the beef, sausage meat, eggs, tomato paste, mushrooms, salt, marjoram, savory and 2 tablespoons of the A.1. Sauce.

Form into a loaf and place in a greased loaf pan or baking dish. Bake in a 350 degrees oven [180 celsius, gas mark 4] for 50 minutes. Brush the top of the loaf with the remaining A1-Sauce and bake 10 minutes longer.

EDITOR'S NOTE: I have not tested Jayne's recipe but based on my meatloaf-developing experience (and Jenny's review) I bet it's pretty good. One thing I'd change is I'd mold the mixture in a loaf pan then invert it onto a sheet pan (as I do my Stella's Creole Meatloaf) so it gets browned all over on the outside during cooking.

Link here for my Stella's Creole Meatloaf, as mentioned!

Jayne and family in the back yard of the Pink Palace. I wonder if her meat-sausage loaf was on the menu. See the sweet heart shape in the rocks over the fire? She put hearts on everything! More on the Pink Palace here, and here!

Thanks again Jayne, for sharing your romantic Valentine's loaf!
